Guest Speaker: Maya Jackson
I forgot to mention in my earlier blog that we had a second guest speaker in Intro to Mass Comm. Her name was Maya Jackson and she was an alumni of our North Carolina Central University. When Jackson began speaking I thought I would have a hard time relating to her. While we both had a hard time deciding what careers we wanted her reasons were vastly different from mine. I had no interest but she had too many interests. Maya Jackson was part of almost everything in high school. She was part of the school band, a member of various clubs, and state champion in track and field. As a student athlete she got to attend NC A&T and UNC Wilmington on scholarships. The majors Jackson took up included Political Science and Afro-American studies. She described herself as getting "bored" with those and even dropping out of school at one point. However, she would later attend NCCU and establish the school's first Hip-Hop initiative.
Jackson would later tell us of her time as an accountant. She talked about how her race and gender affected her time at the workplace as well. Since most of the black people working at her company were maintenance, and the only other black accountant was a man; it was a very surreal time for her. Jackson pointed out the racial circumstances for most of her clients. While other accountants would deal with companies she would get churches and chicken and waffle restaurants. I found her speech more and more interesting as she went on to talk about her career.
Jackson's LinkedIn profile summary states "Results driven integrated marketing specialist, with seven years in the media and entertainment industries." and that's definitely an impression I got from her. If I learned anything about Maya Jackson the person it's that she's an achiever. But what I liked most about her speech was her business, the Jaxton Creative Group,LLC. It's a small company but one with huge potential. They use branding and marketing strategies to propel the careers of entertainers. This doesn't just mean musicians; photographer and even culinary artists are welcome clients for her company. I admire her for this business plan. Not only is she supporting the arts but the idea for the Jaxton Creative Group,LLC is an outstanding idea in my opinion. Kudos to Maya Jackson.
