Guest Speaker: Pam Saulsby
Today in Intro to Mass Comm, Emmy award winning journalist Pam Saulsby, came to our class to discuss her career and offer advice to the students about the field of Broadcast Journalism. Saulsby has spent thirty years on television as a news anchor. Out of those thirty years, twenty of them were spent in Raleigh, North Carolina for WRAL-TV.
After spending so much time in that field of work, Saulsby would fall into the routine of adhering to schedules and appointments. This led to the first lesson she taught the class: Time is everything. From the amount spent in the make up room to the amount that goes in the story; time management means everything in broadcast journalism. I felt this was the most important lesson she taught the class but what really stood out was her story about the golf tournament.
Saulsby's news station was getting ready for a golf tournament and they three employees to represent them. The news station would select three white men for the golf tournament; a decision Saulsby spoke out against. She believed at least one woman and/or person of color should have attended to represent the news station. Saulsby would later explain to us(the class) that diversity in the newsroom helps the product. It helps especially so, if the people who work backstage on the reports are from varied culture because more points of view will be available.
I felt Pam Saulsby was an excellent guest for the class because of her experience in television broadcasting. It was easy to tell she was a news anchor; not only did she speak well but she did great job keeping everyone's interest. Saulsby is a great person and totally worth listening to.
